Friday Freestyle, July 2nd

Happy Friday fam! We freestyle’d our way into July!

This is the third installment of Friday Freestyle where I invite folks in for a tour of my random thoughts and musings before we all storm into the weekend. And remember, if you’re living for the weekend, consider a trip down FIRE lane: What is FIRE? (Financial Independence Retire Early)

Series I’m semi-ashamed to admit I’m watching

Shadow & Bone, S1 on Netflix

After initially watching the trailer, I scoffed this show off as too-YA for me–but here we are. Because I’m watching it out of order (sometimes I watch with Yunji then I go back to fill in the gaps), I’m not even totally sure what the show is about.

There’s a fold which is like a shadow thing that’s bad? Then there are Grisha who are people with various superpowers, ordinary humans, and Fjerdan folks who hunt Grisha–I am sure I am butchering this synopsis but also assume no one reading this is a massive fan (correct me in the comments!). Meanwhile, someone we thought was “ordinary” is actually a Grisha who is the mythically prophesied Sun Summoner. She, the Sun Summoner, gets split from her best friend–who obviously is in love with her–and goes to live and train in Little Palace (anything but). All meanwhile, there’s a ragtag group with varying backgrounds trying to kidnap here.

I’m not selling this very well, but if you get through episode 1, you’ll probably be hooked. If nothing else, here’s to more Hapa representation!

Series I’m still watching (and stuck waiting for each episode)

Loki S1 on Disney+

The show has continued to deliver week after week. After this week’s latest episode (ep #4), I am truly hooked. I don’t want to say much as I have major spoilers at my disposal, but this is easily the best MCU Disney+ so far. As much as I am griping that I can’t binge Loki outright, it has been nice having a little surprise/treat each Wednesday.

Book I’m currently reading* (listening to)

Babylon’s Ashes (The Expanse #6) by James S. A. Corey

I’m about a quarter of the way through Babylon’s Ashes–book #6 of The Expanse Series. I thoroughly enjoyed Leviathan Wakes (The Expanse, 1), but was left feeling deflated after books two and three. After book four (Cibola Burn) and even more so book five (Nemesis Games), I have been waiting to get my hands on the sixth book!

Without giving too much away, I’ll simply share what George R. R. Martin (author of A Song of Fire and Ice/Game of Thrones) has to say: “Interplanetary adventure the way it ought to be written”.

If you’re into sci-fi/fantasy at all, I’d highly recommend checking out book one: Leviathan Wakes. Hate reading (and my reading recc’s 😂)? The Expanse is also a TV show available on Amazon Prime–binge your hearts out!

Something I’m looking forward to / what I’m up to this weekend

My friend, Greg, whom we were hanging out with in Mexico City is/may be coming to visit Puebla this weekend. In addition to that, with Puebla pissing rain each day, it will be a good time to finally get/go out and try some new restaurants and bars here. Outside of last Saturday–and briefly Sunday for brunch– we have basically stayed in our apartment building and been cooking all of our meals. It will be nice to go out, explore, and try some new eating and drinking establishment around the neighborhood.

(Really) Random Thoughts

Speaking of pissing rain, I have been fortunate enough to live my whole life in places where it doesn’t rain much. I always forget how much rain affects my mood, but I’m happy to report that today has been pretty clear (and at times even sunny). We were able to go out for lunch before the sky (inevitably) leaks down on us later this evening.

Does anyone else use Grammarly? Does anyone else not feel the need to always include Oxford Commas? I’m debating removing the Grammarly plugin because they can’t live without every single Oxford Comma being present.

Content coming down the pipeline

The week of July 5th should be packed with content. Monday I’m planning to publish Investing 102, talking about investing in real estate, commodities, alternatives, and cryptocurrency. Tuesday, I will launch a YouTube video of a lunch or dinner out in Mexico City (leaning toward Rosetta at the moment). Wednesday I will be writing more about PV either top 10 bites or about my favorite tacos and torts. Thursday, if I can finally get over the procrastination hump, I will finally release my Polanco Neighborhood Tour. I have over 30 minutes of footage and am not sure how to package it. Finally, next Friday you’ll get my fourth freestyle 😉

Have a great (long) weekend, and see you next week!

Write to you soon,
