Friday Freestyle, July 30th

Happy Friday fam! Hope everyone had a great week as we cruise into August. This year is flying by!

What’s on my mind: basketball

I’m usually not one to care too much about sports drafts (probably because I don’t watch NCAA/college sports much at all). I would also typically care more about the NFL draft than the NBA draft. This year, however, was an exception.

The Warriors had two picks in the first half of the first round, so I was super into it. Prior to the 2019-2020 season, the warriors went to the final five times in a row and won three championships. This resulted in late round picks that didn’t matter much (the better you do during the season the worse the pick you get to act as a way to balance the league).

After losing Kevin Durant to Brooklyn and Klay Thompson to injury, the last two seasons have been pretty rough. Last year, we had the #2 overall pick at this time. That sounds exciting, but it lent itself to only one of a handful of outcomes. This year armed with picks #7 and #14, there were several more outcomes available.

Suffice it to say we were able to grab Jonathan Kuminga at #7 who at one point was thought would go at #5, and we picked Moses Moody at #14 who we originally thought about taking at #7. I’m very happy with how the draft went and super excited for the new season to kick off!

What I’m watching: Tattoo Redo

Since last week’s Friday post, I have finished Ragnarok (both seasons 1 & 2). Season 2 was a little wonky and cheesy at times, but I really hope they get renewed for a third season as things have really heated up.

I’m currently watching Netflix’s Tattoo Redo. You can probably guess what this show is about: semi-reality TV where folks with botched tattoos come in to–not surprisingly–get them “redo’d”. The twist here is that they don’t choose their new tattoo coverup: the person they bring in with them does. It’s a pretty mindless show perfect to add some background sound over breakfast and/or lunch. I really like a few of the artist’s styles namely Rose (American traditional) and Matty B (Japanese).

Yunji wanted me to share that we recently watched–and thoroughly enjoyed–Disney’s Cruella. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but of course something with two Emmas–Thompson & Stone–would be great. I really dig that Disney is going back to their film vault to give color to their hit films’ villains. I much prefer this to all the live action reboots they’ve been doing

What I’m reading: Baptism of Fire (The Witcher, #3)

Currently listening to Baptism of Fire (The Witcher, #3). First, I really enjoy The Witcher series. What’s crazy is even when not much is happening (action wise), the author does a great job of bringing in new and old characters and having entertaining interactions. I’m about 80% through this book, and to be honest, not much has really happened. With that said, I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

Second, I probably need to stop listening to this series via audiobook. There are so many characters it is really hard to keep track of. While I enjoy this book and series, I often forget what’s going on and get lost. I typically remedy this by reading summaries and reviews to fill in the gaps, but I should probably just stick to reading instead of listening.

As season 2 of The Witcher makes its way to Netflix. I’ll likely reread or re-listen Blood of Elves (book 1) and Time of Contempt (book 2) to refresh my memory ahead of the new episodes. FWIW, I’d currently stack rank the three novels in the following order: Time of Contempt > Blood of Elves > Baptism of Fire.

First world problems

Please feel free to skip over this if unnecessary rants aren’t your thing. We recently relocated to Queretaro, and the new neighborhood and surroundings have been a nice change of pace. We are staying at a very new and modern condo complex that has a nice, large pool.

The issue is that (because fo COVID?) we can only use said pool twice a week for two hours each time. On top of that, you have to go through an archaic process of manually reserving time and asking for a signed PIECE OF PAPER to use the pool. To make things even more confusing, no one is ever using the pool.

Since we got here–and used the pool without “permission”–they have stationed someone to sit by the pool and monitor it. It is the most bizarre and annoying thing: 85˚ and sunny with no one using the pool, yet we aren’t “allowed” to use it because “those are the rules”.

I’m writing about this in hopes I can look back at this and realise/remember how dumb and small a “problem” this was.

tl;dr: I hate being told what to do. Even worse when the reasoning makes no sense 🥴

What’s up this weekend?

On to merrier topics: the weekend! We don’t have many plans this weekend, but after being mostly kooked up inside this week, we will be excited to get out and explore.

Last weekend we got in late Saturday afternoon, so we only left to grab dinner and drinks. Sunday we grabbed brunch before stocking up our house with groceries, so we didn’t do much exploring either.

This weekend, we will finally go do some proper exploring of the central, historic district at some point. The only other thing I really want–and plan–to do is go visit Cervecería Hércules. This is one of Mexico’s top craft beer producers and set at an abandoned textile factory.

It’s a little under an hour walk from our apartment, so we will walk there before getting some beers and lunch. After that, we will use the aforementioned pool because I followed the asinine process of reserving the pool for two hours.

Coming soon…

Another passing week means more content coming down the pipeline.
