Friday Freestyle, July 9th

We made it to another Friday fam! Hope everyone had a great weekend and has something to look forward to this weekend!

Meal I can’t get over

There were six restaurants I really wanted to eat at while in Puebla/Cholula. One of them was a bit more complicated to get to: Intro. After realizing Intro is next to the International Baroque Museum (and that there’s free entry on Wednesdays), we planned a day excursion to both.

Spoiler alert: the museum changed their free day to Sunday. That didn’t deter us as the surrounding gardens/park were more fun than (I assume) the museum would’ve been. It also didn’t get in the way of our meal at Intro.

Our meal at Intro turned out to be both of our favorite meals in Mexico this whole trip (including everything we ate in Mexico City). The drinks were great, every dish was excellent, and the pacing and order was spot on. What I think gives restaurants like Intro a leg up over other restaurants is not being constrained to a single cuisine.

We ordered smoked cauliflower chowder, breaded/fried shrimp with yuzu and sriracha aioli, steak tartare with white truffle oil, their “fucking chicken sandwich” with blue cheese, avocado, and more sriracha aioli, and duck confit ravilois. That’s French, Italian, Asian and American in my book, and without any culinary constrictions the meal’s flavors were unleashed.

I’ve also been getting so tired of boring cocktail menus, and they didn’t disappoint in this category either. I started with a Vodka Chai that was super light and refreshing, while Yunji kicked off with a Bloody Mary that included Ancho Reyes (chile liqueur), Cholulua, ginger salt, and dehydrated meat as a garnish. I followed that up with an Apple Herbet (Hendricks, sherry wine, celery, apple, lime tea, & lychee), while Yunji had a Matcha Sour (Pisco, apple syrup, matcha tea, yuzu saline, egg white, & lime juice).

Track I’m listening to

Casey sent this to me; still listening.

Ichon – La vie

Something I’m looking forward to

People visiting. My mom will officially be coming to visit us in Mexico later this year. We’re planning on seeing friends in Puebla next weekend. We have a friend visiting in Queretaro. And more friends may be visiting Mexico City in September/October. Bring on the friends and fam.

What I’m up to this weekend

It just dawned on me that we are halfway through our time in Puebla. With only two weekends left and friends visiting us in Puebla next weekend, this is our last chance to check out Cholula (I, too, did not know there was a city for the namesake hot sauce). Planning to eat at one of the other six said restaurants: NA’AN Cocina Estacional. Before that, we’re going to (try to) get some craft burr at Cerveceria Cholula. Not sure what else we will do there, but I have some pins to guide me.

Random thoughts

I was thinking about why we sleep–not the biological/physical reason. Dreams are just so bizarre, yet when we are in them they seem to make perfect sense. I think about reincarnation and souls from time to time and wonder if dreams are a way to repress the other “lives” we’ve lived.

Book I didn’t expect

Beach Read by Emily Henry

After reading Mexican Gothic (creepy) and Moonwalking With Einstein (intense), I wanted a chill read. I thought Beach Read would be mindless and chill, but it ended up involving infidelity, lots of characters, and not much beach reading. I ended up liking the book a lot, but it was not what I expected at all. Yes, I read romance/chick lit occasionally.

Coming soon

For the first time in a while, I’m not 100% sure what I’m going to work on next week. I want to do a video and blogpost on the cost of living in Mexico City. I also need to film and edit an Airbnb tour of our spot in Puebla. The Polanco neighborhood tour video continues to be procrastinated on, and I’d also like to do some write ups on 1-day/neighborhood itineraries in Mexico City.
