Friday Freestyle, August 27th

Happy Friday fam! Summer is ending (depending on where you are), and I continue to wonder where the time goes.

Quote I’m pondering: “Comparison is the thief of joy”

Teddy Roosevelt allegedly said that for those of you wondering. I’ve been thinking about things along these lines when I remembered seeing this quote over the past few days.

I think comparison is something a lot of us struggle with, but it’s especially present in the world of social media or content creation. I’ve been feeling up and down about my YouTube, and seeing folks who hit X subscribers in Y time usually doesn’t do anything positive.

It’s important to remember that I should only compete against myself and that I’m running my own race.

What’s in my stomach: fried chicken (livers)

Our first meal in San Miguel de Allende was at Kenten’s. Kenten’s is a small Southern restaurant less than 10 minutes from our Airbnb. I forgot how I found it, but it may have been from browsing Google Maps or from a blog I read.

At Kenten’s, we ordered the fried mushrooms to start (delicious) along with two cocktails: a Bloody Mary (yum) and a are-you-sure-this-is-our-strongest-drink Hurricane (divine). While the drink prices were a little high (welcome to San Miguel!), they were both fantastic. Kenten’s prides themselves in using fresh squeezed juices and my passionfruit pulp was excellent.

For our mains, we split a fried chicken sandwich (might actually rival The Bird!) and an order of fried chicken livers. While the livers were good, I didn’t anticipate eating 10 of them.

Overall, the food and vibe were great, and I’m excited to go back for brunch to try their Cajun Benedict!

What I’m watching:

For a moment, I thought I actually hadn’t watched TV in almost a full week. Then I remembered we just finished a show we started in Puebla Spinning Out. The show had its ups and downs, but I’d be lying if I said I was surprised they weren’t renewed for a second season.

The show follows ice skaters living in Sun Valley? Idaho as they grapple mental health disorders and love triangles. It was entertaining for the most part, but you really had to suspend disbelief as the season carried on.

Verdict: skip

After RuPaul Season 11, I immediately started Season 12. While I thought Season 11 started/was extremely weak, Ru must have agreed as Season 12 opened up with a bang. Within a few episodes, one of my favorite contestants was eliminated, and I haven’t watched since. #bitter

What I’m reading: How Iceland Changed the World

How Iceland Changed the World

People We Meet on Vacation was enjoyable but probably more predictable and less good than Beach Read. Like Beach Read, PWMoV was not what I expected. I expected someone traveling and meeting lots of new/different people, but the main character mostly traveled with the same person.

Verdict: if you’re into romance/Chick Lit, I’d prob give it a read

I originally planned to listen to Harry Potter after I finished People We Meet on Vacation, but then a book I wanted popped up on Libby. How Iceland Changed the World is yet another Nordic book I have thoroughly enjoyed (the others being: Utopia for Realists, Nordic Theory of Everything, and The Year of Living Danishly).

While I fully intend to finish this book tonight (I’m at ~80%), I’m not sure if I’ll follow through with Harry Potter or look for something else.

What’s up this weekend?

This is our first full weekend in San Miguel de Allende. The past few days here have been great, and this might be my favorite city of this trip so far.

Weather permitting, we will go out for brunch/lunch/dinner on Saturday and then brunch on Sunday before Rappi-ing groceries for the week. I have a few ideas on where to grab brunch but need to do some research on lunch/dinner spots here for the coming weekend.

The other big goal is to attempt to catch up on sleep. I’m sure we will watch some movies, start a new series, and try to catch up on some reading as well.

Coming soon…

I’m not too sure how much longer or how consistently I’ll write on this blog. Readership is down (and was never very strong to begin with). I have a few ideas I want to write about re: FIRE/investing and will see which ones draw me next.

My most recent blog post: Never Pay Taxes on Your 401k (https://intristang.com/never-pay-taxes-on-your-401k/)

YouTube is going slowly but surely, and I made a goal to myself to do it for three years before throwing in the towel. On YouTube, this Saturday I’ll be publishing Puebla Regional Cuisine/Comida Tipica Poblana, and then next week I will publish Queretaro Cost of Living.

Here’s my most recent YouTube video:

Have a great weekend and see you soon!
