Friday Freestyle, June 18th

Happy Friday fam! Congrats, you made it to Friday–and for those of you who have today off, happy early Juneteenth!

This is the first installment of Friday Freestyle where I will share some random thoughts and musings. I will try to do a post like this every week (unless even if no one reads it) in tandem with a financial freedom/FIRE post and/or food & travel post.

Series I just binged:

Lupin Season 2

Inspired by the adventures of Arsène Lupin, gentleman thief Assane Diop sets out to avenge his father for an injustice inflicted by a wealthy family.

Without giving too much away to folks who haven’t watched any Lupin, Lupin is a show about a gentleman thief. He uses disguises and wit in lieu of brute force and violence. I deeply enjoyed Season 1 (which ended with a cliffhanger) and think I may have enjoyed Season 2. And did I mention I finished Season 2 in one sitting?

Lupin Season 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Netflix.

Series I can’t wait for the next episode:

Loki Season 1

The mercurial villain Loki resumes his role as the God of Mischief in a new series that takes place after the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

Continuing the theme of streaming, I am deeply into Disney+’s new original series, Loki. Loki has always been a very polarizing and frustrating character in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), but you can’t deny his character has depth. I’m only two episodes in (only two episodes have aired and new episodes are released every Wednesday), but I am deeply engrossed. The “world” the show takes place in is quite large, and Owen Wilson, Mobius, is perfectly cast alongside Tom Hiddleston, Loki.

Book I’m currently reading:

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Mexican Gothic is about a young socialite named Noemí Taboada who, at her father’s request–and in exchange for his blessing to attend university–goes to a remote village to check on her ailing cousin. The novel’s setting takes place in 1950s Mexico (first in Mexico City where we meet Noemí and later outside a small town at High Place, the name of the estate Noemí’s cousin lives at).

Mexican Gothic is categorized as horror and–wait for it–gothic. A lot of the novel is a bit odd and dark (both in the waking and dream world). Noemí is repeatedly told the house and family are haunted and that she should leave immediately, so obviously she…stays. I’m about halfway through the book and have enjoyed reading a period piece about a place I currently am staying (though 1950s Mexico seems, unsurprisingly, like a far cry from where it is today).

Something(s) I’m looking forward to:

Next Thursday is my birthday (shameless plug). We will be going out to dinner at one of my all-time favorite restaurants: Maximo Bistrot.

I have only eaten there twice (once in early 2018 and more recently in mid-2019) each time for lunch, so I am excited to finally try dinner there. The menu changes daily, so I’m not exactly sure what will be on hand, but I have always enjoyed their starters, drinks, and pastas. Stay tuned for pics and/or a YouTube video of dinner there soon!

What I’m up to this weekend:

Ah, the weekend. A time for fun, relaxing and leisure. This weekend I will be “working”. That is, I will be filming two “itineraries” or neighborhood tours.

Weather permitting, I will put together a video tour of Condesa and Roma followed by a tour of Centro Historico. We spent last Saturday filming a similar tour in Polanco, and I am very excited to publish the video to YouTube once editing is done.

Since arriving in Mexico City, we have not eaten many tacos–which many consider a crime. This weekend this will be remedied as I have 8 taquerias I plan to visit.

What I’m “stressed” about:

Stressed is in quotes for a reason. I have the fun problem of deciding how we will spend our last 4-8 weeks in Mexico, so I have been spending a lot of time Googling flights and Airbnbs to figure out what makes the most sense.

We’re currently leaning toward ending our trip by the beach (since we will have been citybound for the majority all of our time in Mexico). Because we spent time in PV last year, we are leaning toward trying somewhere new. The frontrunner is currently looking like Playa del Carmen, and while we have both been there (and currently don’t hear great things), the accessibility and supply of good Airbnbs might be enough to sway us there.

Content coming down the pipeline:

Next week, I’m planning to release one or two YouTube videos: a lunch visit to a northern style Mexican restaurant and/or the previously mentioned Polanco neighborhood tour.

Museo Soumaya, Polanco, CDMX

In addition to YouTube, my goal is to write 2-3 posts for this blog next week: my first financial freedom/FIRE article, favorite food and restaurants in PV, and/or my second installment of Friday Freestyles.

With that, I hope you read at least one thing that was intristang (see what I did there?) and that you make the most of your weekend.

Have a great weekend and write to you soon,
